Why Sustainability matters to me

I’ve always tried to recycle as much as possible, and even more so since I moved into my new home. When I was at Uni, there were recycle bins for food waste, cardboard, paper, glass, cans and plastic as well as the general waste. There was the potential of fines if things were not recycled properly which was a big incentive for me to make sure it was all done properly.

Recycling has become more important to me since working in an office based job and realising how much paper and plastic is used each day. I’ve also watched a couple of documentaries, the most notable being ‘A Plastic Ocean’and realised just how bad the problem is with single use plastics and unnecessary waste in general. I think it is important that we all do our bit to try and save the environment, so I bought a book called F**K plastic to give me some ideas on how I can do my bit. As the popular T-Shirt slogan goes – there’s no Planet B!

Some of the things I have done over the years has been to use a website called Freecycle to collect plastic plant pots that people are giving away, instead of buying them. Last year, I also collected used yoghurts and plastic punnets to start all of my seeds in the greenhouse, then cleaned all of these to recycle after I was done with them.

I have been thinking recently about what I could change in my life to make the most impact on my plastic use, and one thing I am going to try is making my own pasta. I tend to go through a pack of pasta a week when I batch cook, so it seems like the perfect start to my sustainability journey.

When making changes, I think it’s important not to change everything all at once because it is harder to make the habits stick. So I will either be doing very small multiple changes or one big change a month to try and make a difference.

Another small change I have made it to buy a compost caddy for the house (made from 100% recycled plastic) to encourage me to compost more food waste. My dad has also given me a second compost bin that I intend to put into good use this year.

Stay tuned to see how I get on!
